Treadmill walking at the gym

Treadmill walking is simple, accessible cardio for any fitness level. You control speed and duration, and you can track your progress by time or distance. It works well as a warm-up, a finisher, or just a way to move a bit more during the week.

Doable at 75 of the 76 gyms GoSet follows

How to do it

  1. Step onto the treadmill when it’s stopped, stand in the middle of the belt, and look forward, not at the floor.
  2. Set the speed gradually and start with a comfortable walking pace before increasing.
  3. Walk in the middle of the belt, let your arms swing naturally, and keep your hands off the rails if you can.
  4. Keep your torso upright, shoulders relaxed, without leaning forward or hanging on to the bars.
  5. Place your feet softly and keep a steady, regular pace for the planned duration.
  6. At the end, slowly reduce the speed to an easy walk, then stop the treadmill completely before stepping off.

Common mistakes

  • Staring at the floor the whole time

Instead : Look mainly forward. It helps your balance and posture and keeps you centred on the belt.

  • Gripping the rails the entire walk

Instead : Use the rails mainly to get on, off, or if you lose your balance. If you can, walk with your hands free for a more natural gait.

  • Getting on or off while the belt is moving

Instead : Wait until the treadmill is fully stopped before getting on or off, even if you’re in a rush.

  • Starting too fast right away

Instead : Always start slow, then increase the speed bit by bit. Do the opposite at the end by slowing down gradually.

Coach tips

  • Breathe naturally through nose and mouth without holding your breath. You should be able to say a few words while walking.
  • Think about walking “tall”: upright torso, eyes forward, controlled steps without stomping.
  • Use the time or distance on the screen to track your progress from workout to workout.
  • If you’re new to the treadmill, stick to an easy speed for a few sessions before trying to go faster.

Variations

  • Easy walk as a warm-up before your other exercises.
  • Brisk walk at the end of a workout as extra cardio.
  • Longer walking session on the treadmill to accumulate more weekly cardio time.

Sets and reps

In the gym, treadmill walks are often done in blocks of 5 to 30 minutes, depending on your goal, tracking either time or distance on the screen.

Common questions

Do I have to hold the rails the whole time?

No. The rails are mainly there to help you get on and off or steady yourself. If you feel safe, walk in the middle of the belt with your hands free for a more natural walk.

How do I know if the speed is right for me?

A good sign is a pace where you can keep a steady rhythm and speak in short sentences. If you lose balance or feel you need to grab the rails, it’s probably too fast.

Can I use treadmill walking as a warm-up?

Yes, many people do. A few minutes of easy walking helps you get moving before your other exercises.

What if I feel discomfort or pain while walking?

Stop the session and step off once the treadmill has fully stopped. Talk to a health professional before starting again to check what’s going on.
