Treadmill: how to use it properly at the gym
The treadmill lets you walk or run indoors while you control the speed and incline. You can use it for a light warm‑up or a harder effort. It’s easy to adjust, but taking 1–2 minutes to set yourself up makes it much more comfortable.

The essentials
- Raise the incline gradually.
- Stand tall without hanging on the handles.

Setup
- Step onto the treadmill with both feet on the side rails, not on the belt at first.
- Find the start, stop, and emergency stop buttons (often a red safety clip you attach to your shirt).
- Start with very low speed and no incline to get used to the machine.
- Adjust the incline only once you’re already walking steadily.
- Keep your hands close to the side rails at first, without hanging on all the time.
How to do it
- 1. Start the belt at low speed, then place one foot at a time on the moving belt while looking forward.
- 2. Walk for a few seconds to find your rhythm before increasing speed or incline.
- 3. Keep your body upright, look straight ahead, and avoid staring at the console or your feet for too long.
- 4. Let your arms swing naturally when you feel comfortable instead of gripping the rails tightly.
- 5. For running, increase the speed gradually, stay centred on the belt, and take steady, regular steps.
- 6. To finish, slowly decrease the speed down to an easy walk, then stop the treadmill completely before stepping off.
Common mistakes
Staring at feet or the console
Instead : Keep your eyes forward, like you would outside. It helps your balance and your walking or running rhythm.
Holding the rails the whole time
Instead : Use the rails mainly to start, adjust settings, or steady yourself. Then gently let go so you can walk or run more naturally.
Getting on or off while the belt is fast
Instead : Always slow the speed down before stepping off. Ideally, stop the belt completely before you leave the treadmill.
Starting too fast
Instead : Begin very slowly, especially if you’re new to the treadmill. Increase speed or incline one step at a time.
Coach tips
- Breathe steadily and relaxed, just like you would on an outdoor walk or run.
- If you want more effort without running, use a slight incline instead of only cranking up the speed.
- Keep a comfortable stride: no need to force big steps, aim for what feels natural for you.
- If you’re unsure, start with short walking bouts and add a bit more time as you feel more confident.
Variations
- Slow treadmill walk as a warm‑up before your strength workout.
- Incline treadmill walk to make things harder without having to run.
- Steady treadmill run at constant speed for continuous effort.
Sets and reps
At the gym, people often use the treadmill for a few minutes of easy walking as a warm‑up, or for longer walk or run blocks depending on their level and their goal for the day.

Common questions
Should I start with walking or running on the treadmill?
Most people start with walking to feel stable and confident first. Then you can add small bouts of running if you feel comfortable.
Do I always need to use incline?
No. You can stay flat if you want a gentler option. Incline mainly makes the effort harder without needing more speed.
Where should my feet land on the treadmill?
Stay in the middle of the belt, not too close to the front or back, with a natural stride. If you feel yourself drifting back, lower the speed a bit.
What if I feel pain while walking or running?
Slow the treadmill down, stop the belt, and step off carefully. Talk to a professional before getting back on.
