Machine abdominal crunch

The machine abdominal crunch is a seated, loaded crunch that targets your trunk / core. The guided path helps you focus on contracting your abs instead of worrying about balance. It works well for beginners and also when you want to add more load as you get stronger.

Abdominal crunch

The essentials

  • Curl your torso, bringing ribs toward hips.
  • Don’t pull with your arms.

Setup

  1. Adjust the seat so the machine’s pivot lines up with your trunk, not your neck.
  2. Place your feet flat and stable without pushing hard through your legs.
  3. Set the pad or handles on the upper part of your torso, not directly on your neck.
  4. Pick a light weight on the stack at first, just to test the movement.
  5. Sit up tall with your back supported if there is a backrest, trunk neutral before you start.

How to do it

  1. Sit all the way back on the seat and grab the handles or place your arms where the machine is designed for them.
  2. Take a breath in at the top with your trunk upright, without over-arching your lower back.
  3. As you breathe out, flex your trunk forward in 1 to 2 seconds, bringing your chest toward your pelvis without pulling with your arms.
  4. Keep your hips steady and your lower body quiet; let the movement come from your trunk / core.
  5. Control the way back up as you breathe in, over 2 to 3 seconds, returning close to the starting position without letting the weight stack rest fully.
  6. Repeat with a smooth tempo and the same range of motion each rep, without slamming the weight stack between reps.

Common mistakes

  • Pulling with the arms or shoulders

Instead : Think about bringing your chest toward your pelvis by rounding through the trunk. Let your arms just hold the pad or handles in place, not drive the movement.

  • Throwing your body forward

Instead : Slow it down. Go down in 1–2 seconds and up in 2–3 seconds. If you need momentum, the weight is likely too heavy.

  • Over-arching the lower back at the start

Instead : Start with a neutral or lightly braced trunk, not with your hips pushed back and your lower back arched hard. Adjust the seat so you’re not stuck in that position.

  • Holding your breath

Instead : Match your breathing to the movement: inhale on the way up, exhale as you crunch down. If you have to hold your breath to move the weight, it’s probably too heavy.

Coach tips

  • Aim for a strong contraction at the bottom, but avoid fully collapsing your trunk; keep control, no bouncing.
  • Keep constant tension: don’t let the stack rest between reps, keep it just slightly off the stopper.
  • To make it harder without going much heavier, slow the way up to about 3 seconds.
  • With a selectorized stack you can use drop sets: when you hit fatigue, drop the pin a plate or two lighter and continue right away with the same form.

Variations

  • Shorter range of motion if your back feels sensitive: stay in the comfortable zone instead of using the full range at the top or bottom.
  • More controlled top position: stop just before you lose tension in your trunk instead of coming all the way upright.

Sets and reps

On this machine, people often do 2 to 4 sets of 10 to 20 reps with a load that still lets them control their trunk. Some use it at the start or at the end of a workout to target the core more directly.

Common questions

Where should I feel the machine abdominal crunch?

You should mainly feel it in your trunk / core, around your abs. If you feel it mostly in your neck or lower back, check your seat height, pad position, and lower the weight.

What weight should I use on the crunch machine?

Start with a weight that you can move without momentum and with good control on the way down. The stack has several levels, so increase gradually as long as your form stays the same for all your reps.

Do I need to bring my chest all the way to my thighs?

No. Go down until you get a clear contraction in your trunk without pain or feeling crushed. Keep the movement comfortable and controlled.

What if my back hurts on the crunch machine?

Stop the exercise right away. You can later try adjusting the range or the weight, but if the pain keeps coming back, talk to a professional before continuing with this movement.
