Core: make more sense of your gym exercises

The core is everything that stabilizes the middle of your body. Exercises like kneeling cable crunch, Pallof press or plank are there to help you control your core, not just to “feel the burn”. This kind of work helps your strength, posture and the rest of your training.

Coach tips

  • Before each set, think “brace the core”, whether it’s a plank, Pallof press or crunch. Gently tighten your midsection like you’re getting ready for a light tap.
  • Keep quality over quantity: 2–3 seconds on the way down or back, no swinging your legs or pulling on your neck. End the set when you start to lose control of your position.
  • Always set up the bench or machine so your lower back stays in contact or neutral, especially on the adjustable ab bench and the abdominal crunch machine.
  • Change angles: declined work on the ab bench, hanging work on the power tower, floor planks, cable work. Your core responds well to different positions and types of resistance.

Common questions

What’s the difference between a crunch and a sit-up?

With a crunch (on the floor, decline bench or machine), you mostly curl the upper part of your torso and keep the lower back more stable. On decline sit-ups, you come up much higher and the whole torso lifts. Crunches are often easier to control and usually feel lighter on the lower back.

How many core exercises per workout should I do?

In gyms, you often see people doing 1–3 core exercises in a workout, for example a plank, a crunch (bench or machine) and something like a Pallof press. What really matters is that your technique still looks solid at the end of each set. If your posture collapses or you start compensating a lot, that’s too much for now.

Can I train my core every workout?

Many people do some core work 2–4 times per week, often at the end of a session. The key is recovery: if you’re so sore that you can’t control a plank or crunch properly, you can cut back the volume next time or leave an extra day between core sessions.

What if I feel back pain during a core exercise?

Stop that exercise right away and switch to something you can control better, like an easier or shorter plank. If the pain keeps coming back, talk to a health professional before pushing that area again.
