Station à câble: how to use the cable station

The cable station is a machine with pulleys and handles you can adjust to do many exercises standing, seated, or kneeling. You can use it for your upper body, core, and more. It works well for beginners and regulars, because the weight is easy to adjust.

Setup

  1. Pick the attachment for your exercise (straight bar, V‑bar, rope, etc.).
  2. Set the pulley height (low, mid, or high) depending on the movement you want to do.
  3. Adjust the anchor point on the station so the cable path is free and smooth.
  4. Choose a weight that lets you control both the lifting and lowering without swinging.
  5. Stand or kneel close enough to keep the cable under tension without the stack slamming.

How to do it

  1. Position your body in relation to the cable for the exercise you’re doing (facing the machine, back to it, sideways, seated, or kneeling).
  2. Grab the handle or bar with a comfortable grip and start with a slight tension in the cable before your first rep.
  3. Set your feet (or knees) solid on the floor and keep your torso stable for the whole set.
  4. Move only the part of the body that should work for the exercise, keeping the cable path smooth, no jerking or yanking.
  5. Control the way back down for 2 to 3 seconds until you’re close to the starting point, without letting the plates crash.
  6. Keep a steady breathing rhythm: exhale on the effort, inhale on the controlled way back.

Common mistakes

  • Standing too far from the machine

Instead : Step closer so the cable stays under tension the whole time and the weight stack doesn’t bang at the end of every rep.

  • Using body momentum

Instead : Lower the weight and keep your torso stable. Only the joint that’s supposed to move for that exercise should be doing the work.

  • Holding your breath

Instead : Focus on breathing out during the effort and in on the way back. A regular breathing pattern helps you control the weight.

  • Very short or uneven range of motion

Instead : Use a weight that lets you repeat the same range of motion each rep, controlling both directions of the movement.

Coach tips

  • For most cable station exercises, a tempo around 1 second up and 2 to 3 seconds down gives good control.
  • For standing work, a solid stance (feet a bit wider than hips or one foot slightly forward) makes it easier to manage the weight.
  • Start with simpler moves like the close‑grip, underhand, or wide‑grip lat pulldown or the cable biceps curl before adding more technical exercises.
  • When it feels easy, slightly increase the weight or add a few reps, but keep the same movement quality.

Variations

  • Cable biceps curl
  • Kneeling cable crunch
  • Close‑grip, underhand, or wide‑grip lat pulldown

Sets and reps

On the cable station, you’ll often see 3 sets of 8 to 15 reps per exercise, depending on the weight used and how much control you aim for.

Common questions

What is a cable station?

It’s a machine with a weight stack connected to cables and pulleys. You clip a bar or handle to the cable and can adjust the height and weight to do different exercises like pulldowns or curls.

Which exercises should I start with on the cable station?

People often start with simpler moves like close‑grip, underhand, or wide‑grip lat pulldowns or the cable biceps curl. The kneeling cable crunch is another option once you’re comfortable setting up the machine.

How do I know if the weight is right on the cable station?

You should be able to control both up and down without swinging or twisting your body. If you’re cheating with your whole body, the weight is probably too heavy.

Is the cable station good for beginners?

Yes. The weight is easy to adjust and the cable path is guided. As long as you take a bit of time to set up and control the movement, it works well for beginners.
